2002

This was the first full year of university. I remember 1000 miles by Vanessa Carlton, particularly during a field trip. I think that is when I first got into Nora Jones too. I used to play that so much that my housemate used to complain.

and this is where this process is quite odd. apparently Totally Addicted to Base was this year.... and Justin Timberlake's album but I think i'll put that to 2003. To be honest, I didnt listen to a lot of music during my degree. Apart from when I was with my boyfriend and we listened to lots of hip hop, rap and RnB. 2002 would have been the first year that i moved away from home and lived away. Ah I remember something that I listened to- some christian rock stuff. I will have to dig that out. so Nora JOnes was the latter part of the year.

Ok let's move Justin and Gladiator theme song to 2003. India Arie to 2003. R kelly.

If i was to nominate one song it would be... Come away with me by Nora Jones.

2001

I thought we'd try something a bit more difficult today. 2001. That was the year I went to university. I wouldnt have had mp3 player yet. The last year of college was hard. In the summer before university i would have just worked, worked as much as i could have done.

I have no strong memories of that year for music. I would have revised a lot. but let's look at the charts.

OK so a few songs in the charts that I remember liking. Probably the most remarkable is Wyclef Jean - Perfect Gentleman, but I don't really remember rocking out to that then. Trick is when to add that whole damn album to the list because it has to be on the list. I think it was when I went to uni.

But the last year of college we would have had OPM Heaven is a halfpipe, D12 Purple pills. That was the year I went on hols and Shaggy was the top song. and because I got high. The camel trip- Lady- hear me tonight- Modjo. That song always reminds me when I came back from the camel trip and im sitting in the back of the 4x4 and i'm cold but feeling very cool.

Ok and Kylie minogue- cant get you out of  my head was a hit that christmas. And moby.

But generally have a bad memory from that time- music wise. So i'll nominate "Lady- hear me tonight" to be the song of the dear. But Can't get you out of my head is a close second.

2014

In 2014 it was the first year that we lived in this house. I was working at RR and it was a year of learning, experimentation (literally) and nest making. I remember first getting the keys to the house and coming here and it was probably the most exciting day of my life.

We still live here and we love the house still. I remember the green carpets and boxes everywhere. The first thing we did was prepare the guest room so we could sleep. And it wasnt long before we started taking polystyrene tiles off the ceiling.

Music.

Wow. This has been so interesting a process. I started scratching my head... how on earth will I remember? So- back then I used to buy a lot of music. So I have records of what I bought that year. I can't be bothered to list them. But I am going to pick the following songs

- We listened to a lot of Imagine Dragons when we first moved in.

- I bought a Sigur Ros album.

- Crave you by Flight Facilities - was what we tested our sound system on!

- War on Drugs - Lost in a dream. Doing lots of cryogenic milling to that song. I think i bought it just for that!

- OMG and this is when we first bought the Magnetic fields 69 love songs- which I used to listen to while using the hammermills- i remember first hearing them and their funny lyrics and absolutely loving it.

- And Bombay Bicycle club I got into in a BIG way this year for the first time. I bought lots of their albums and I absolutely loved "Feel"- their Bollywood style music video gave me goosebumps and made me cry in the car one time just thinking about it (many years later).

- I must have still been listening- I might have still been populating #songoftheday because I bought a really random CD by Ferraby Lionheart. Oh god this changes things- song of the day needs to be part of this playlist. I have been meaning to convert it into a spotify playlist anyway.

- But if was to pick just 1 song for the year it would be Duke Dumont- I got you. I remember driving to suck wood chips and this song got me through this. So maybe Sweater Weather would also be on the list. I need to go back to the drawing board, and get my Twitter sorted out.

I wanted to add just 1 more song - The Joker by the Steve Miller Band as this is the only song I remember from my friend's wedding in Bath. It was a really great wedding.

This was a good start, But I have realised that the playlist is going to be in a really odd order. Do I try and keep it in a sensible order? I think I want to. OK i have two choices- I start from beginning to end. Makes sense? I think the first thing to do is sort my twitter one out

Wakey Wakey

It's been a long time since I last posted here. A long time. Ten years? More?

I wanted to do some public blogging about a new project I have going on.

THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE

Basically I want to start making a sound track. of. my. life. All the songs that have been with me as I have grown up, changed, moved on, and held onto. Music is forever. It will be there when we are all gone. I've shared them and someone else will hear them one day.

I was thinking initially that I would just list all the songs I can remember in some sort of order. For the early years that is probably easy enough but for more modern times it will be a long stream of music that gets constantly updated as I add things to my "liked songs". So I thought instead I would pick the top 10 songs for each year. Which should... be an interesting way to do it. I might split up years into specific memories, I don't know. There are no rules. I just wanted to avoid you having my lockdown playlist as that is a bit... eesh. Good times and bad.

So I thought I'd start with one year at random and see how I get on. Alexa- give me a random year between now and 1983. Ok that didnt work. I asked her when she was made- 2014. That'll do.
